Budget Sounding Board Meets

Posted on Wednesday, April 29th, 2009 under Budget News

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students:

I am writing to provide you with an update on the budget situation at UNCG.

As readers of the Budget Information website know, the state now requires that nearly every check we write be individually approved by the Office of State Budget and Management (OSBM). Most non-faculty hiring as well as pay adjustments for any reason are not permitted. I encourage those in the UNCG community who wish to receive notification of updates to the Budget Information website to subscribe to the budget update listserv.

On April 28, Governor Perdue issued an Executive Order that requires the pay of all state employees to be reduced by ½% of the employee’s annual salary. As this action will require significant effort to program the payroll system to accommodate this temporary change (yet calculate benefits using existing salary rates), we are not yet certain if the ½% temporary reduction will be spread over two months (May and June) or be effective for June only. Regardless, the total reduction amount will be the same. The Executive Order also dictates that employees receive 10 hours off between June 1 and December 31, 2009 to reflect this temporary decrease in pay. When more details are available, they will be posted to the Budget Information website.

The Budget Sounding Board also met on April 28 to discuss the furlough announced earlier in the day, to review the Values Statement approved by the Board of Governors, to discuss a draft of UNCG budget principles, and to discuss concerns raised by the North Carolina State Conference of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). These documents are available on the Budget Information website. During this meeting we agreed to add a member of the Faculty Senate’s Faculty Compensation Committee to the Budget Sounding Board, and I will make that appointment soon.

The academic year will soon come to a close, and we recognize that many faculty and students will be off campus during the summer months when UNCG will need to make important decisions regarding the budget. UNCG’s administration will be in close communication with members of the Budget Sounding Board as we consider options. Let me encourage you to subscribe to the budget update listserv noted above to ensure you receive up to date information during the summer months.

I know these are challenging times for the nation, the state, the University, and all of us. Please know that I will continue to do everything in my power to protect UNCG and maintain our commitment to excellence for our students, alumni, and community.

Sincerely,

Linda P. Brady
Chancellor
