Posted on Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 under Budget News

Dear Members of the University Community:

I have learned recently that many members of our University community first learned about the decision to begin a Reduction-in-Force (RIF) process to manage the budget cuts we will face in the coming fiscal year by reading an article that was published in the News and Record on Thursday, March 26. Budget Reductions Begin at UNCG

Posted on Wednesday, March 25th, 2009 under Budget News

I have committed to keep you informed of the budget situation. The divisions have continued to work on ways to minimize the impact of budget cuts on the core mission of the University. However, the Governor’s budget does provide funding for enrollment growth for next year and provides us with adequate funding for need-based financial aid. These are critical funds we need in order to protect the University’s core academic mission.

UNC President Erskine Bowles today issued the following statement regarding Governor Beverly Perdue’s proposed 2009-11 state budget:

This is the toughest economic climate we have faced in North Carolina in my 63 years. For that reason, I was not surprised that Governor Perdue had to make some very difficult decisions in order to balance her proposed state budget. North Carolina is fortunate to have a governor who is willing to do her homework and make the tough calls—even the ones I may not like.
