Budget and Tuition Update

Members of the UNCG Community,

As we begin a new academic semester at UNCG, we are faced with the most serious economic challenge of our lifetimes.  As you know, we are planning significant budget cuts for the next fiscal year.  The Office of State Budget and Management notified us recently that we should plan for a 6% cut in our state budget for the current fiscal year.  We already had a plan in place to cover the 5% reduction previously mandated by former Governor Easley.

Update on the Budget Situation

To: UNCG Faculty and Staff

I know all of you are aware of the economic problems being experienced nationally and in North Carolina. The nation lost 530,000 jobs in November, which means that the state’s unemployment rate will spike this month. The shortfall that is expected for the state budget in 2009-2010 is expected to exceed $2 billion, and the General Assembly and Governor-elect Beverly Perdue will face enormous challenges for developing a balanced budget for the 2009-2011 biennium. To that end, Governor Easley has requested all state agencies – including The University of North Carolina system – develop budget reduction options of 3 percent, 5 percent and 7 percent to be effective with the new fiscal year.

UNCG’s Response to the Current Economic Situation

I know you are all aware of the challenging economic times facing our state and the nation. Indeed, a recent article in the Wall Street Journal noted that three quarters of the states are anticipating economic hardships for 2009 or 2010 and at least 20 states have already made cuts to public university budgets. We have been treated very well by the General Assembly over the past several years, but North Carolina unfortunately is not immune to the financial challenges facing our country.
